Mushatt, Cecil (1913-2000)
Biographical
Note: Cecil
Mushatt was born in Ireland on May 15, 1913. He
attended
Trinity College in Dublin and received a fellowship to study in the
United States after graduating as a research microbiologist. Dr.
Mushatt trained for psychoanalysis in Boston under Hanns Sachs. During
his training he developed an interest in treating and studying
psychosomatic illnesses. Dr. Mushatt practiced at several
well-known hospitals throughout the Boston area, including
Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital. He
was
also an instructor at Harvard University and Beth Israel Hospital, a
guest lecturer at Simmons College, and a researcher at Boston
University. He maintained a private practice throughout his
career in Boston, and was a member of several medical organizations,
including the American Psychoanalytic Association, the American
Psychosomatic Society, the American Medical Association, and the BPSI.
Summary: the collection mainly consists
of of papers
Dr. Mushatt wrote, presented, and published throughout his
career. Many of these were lectures
delivered at the BPSI and American Psychoanalytic
Association
annual meetings. There are also tape recordings of
lectures and presentations (see Audiovisual
Materials,
audio cassettes 18-21, 163-167), a small box of glass plate negatives,
and photographs. One notable item is an original
portrait of Dr. Felix Deutsch, dated and signed. The
collection
was given to BPSI after Dr. Mushatt's death in 2000 by his son, David
Mushatt, M.D. Also donated was a collection of books, which have since
been processed and cataloged in the BPSI Library.
