Hendrick, Burton J. (1870-1949)
Biographical Note: Burton
Jesse Hendrick, a well-known journalist and writer, was born in New
Haven, CT in 1870. He received his BA and master's degree in Yale, and
worked as an editor at several New Haven and New York newspapers. In
1919 Burton J. Hendrick started writing biographies and books, winning
three Pulitzer Prizes for The Victory of the Sea (1921), The Life and Letters of Walter H. Page (1923), and The Training of An American
(1929). Burton J. Hendrick was a father of Ives Hendrick, one of
the founders and presidents of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and
Institute. Papers included in this collection were donated by
Hendrick's family together with the Ives Hendrick's papers in 1972.
Summary: the collection contains Burton Hendrick's class books, his early articles, book reviews, manuscript of The Benefactions of Andrew Carnegie, and
the correspondence with Ives Hendrick Please note that
more Burton Hendrick's correspondence with his son are included in
the Ives Henrick
Collection. The BPSI Archives also holds an interview with Ives
Hendrick recorded in 1962 (see Audiovisual Materials, audio cassette 397).
