Bibring,
Edward (1894-1959)
Biographical Note:
Edward Bibring was born in Stanislau, Galicia, on April 20, 1894. He
studied philosophy and history at the University of Czernowitz until
the first World War. After his military service he went to
study medicine at the University of Vienna, and later was accepted for
training by the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. A full member
of
the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society since 1927, Dr. Edward Bibring became
the director of society's outpatient department for mental diseases.
Along with Freud and other society members, Edward Bibring went to
London in 1938, where he continued his work as a co-editor-chief of the
Internationale
Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse
and an analyst at the London Psycho-Analytic Institute and Clinic. He
moved to Boston in 1941 to become a training analyst and an outstanding
lecturer at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institut, serving as
a society director from 1947 to 1949. Edward
Bibring's publications made exceptional scientific
contributions to the theory of psychoanalytic therapy, the study of
depression, and the history of psychoanalysis. He died on on Janurary
11, 1959 after a
long and destructive illness.
Summary: the
collection consists of 11 manuscript boxes containing materials for
Edward Bibring's monographs and lectures as well as his book reviews,
working papers, handritten notes on readings, and
miscellaneous correspondence. BPSI also holds a collection of
books from Edward Bibring's personal library and a unique archive of
photographs (see Bibring
Photograph Collection),
some of which have been recently published in a book Edward Bibring Photographs
Psychoanalysts of His Time by
the joint effort of BPSI members and the Analytic Press.
