Abstract Sanford Gifford is a well-known psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, historian, and the BPSI Archives Director. He served as the Hanns Sachs Library Director from 1966 to 2000, taught many BPSI seminars, and helped to develop the BPSI Archives. The creator of our unique Oral History Interviews project, he has been recording conversations with noted psychoanalysts and their relatives for over thirty years. This series consists of audio files related to people prominent in the field of psychoanalysis.

Historical Note

Sanford Gifford is a well-known psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, historian, and the BPSI Archives Director. He served as the Hanns Sachs Library Director from 1966 to 2000, taught many BPSI seminars, and helped to develop the BPSI Archives. The creator of our unique Oral History Interviews project, he has been recording conversations with noted psychoanalysts and their relatives for over thirty years. In addition to his continuing work for the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, Dr. Gifford teaches at Harvard Medical School, works at West Roxbury VA hospital, and chairs the History and Archives Committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He publishes widely and contributes many historical and biographical materials to the BPSI Archives.

Scope and Content

This series consists of audio files related to people prominent in the field of psychoanalysis. It features interviews with many noted psychoanalysts and their family members, such as Grete Bibring, Helene Deutsch, Suzanne and Martin Deutsch, Marie Briehl, Mrs. Martin Peck, Maria Piers, Renee Spitz, and many others.

All interviews conducted by Dr. Sanford Gifford unless otherwise noted.

Series Arrangement

Arranged chronologically in three subseries. Subseries I includes Oral History Interviews with both transcripts and audio availalbe, unless otherwise noted. Subseries II consists of interviews that are audio files only. Subseries III is the Oral History Interviews by Sanford Gifford, composed of both transcripts and audio files.
