This paper, which inaugurates the Nemetz Lecture series on the history of psychoanalysis at BPSI and in the USA, begins with the principle that praxis, theory, and observation constitute the foundations of psychoanalysis and that, necessarily, the foundations change with changes in praxis, theory, and observation. Unlearning needed to accommodate the new learning required by the changing foundations of psychoanalysis represents an immediate consequence of that principle. Illustrations are drawn from contributions by BPSI authors over the course of the 70 years since the death of Sigmund Freud.
