This paper will examine dynamics of dedication, identification and authenticity. It will explore the similarities and differences in how therapist and patient experience these and the tensions therein. The impact and meanings made of the patient’s choice not to “know” the reasons for her therapist’s medical leave will be examined. Likewise it will look at how the current therapist’s knowledge about the health status of the original therapist (also a friend) has impacted the treatment/counter-transference. Excerpts of process from various points in the treatment as well as dialogue between the therapists will be included.
