“They hated their father, who presented such a formidable obstacle to their craving for power and their sexual desires; but they loved and admired him too” – Totem and Taboo, p. 143

At some point, we all love our analysts. One way or another, this love is doomed. Who are they to thwart our dreams – or, worse still, to fulfill the dreams of others? What can they teach us, considering where they come from and where we want to go?

This evening – a continuation of the conversation that began in late October between Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau and Steven Cooper – will address some of the fundamental questions that we have to face as a psychoanalytic institute. In the perpetual chain of generational change, with its tensions between the mortification of submission and the bloodshed of rebellion, how do we progress? How do our constitutional ambivalences affect us and our educators, those parental figures who remain our colleagues? Do they love or pamper, fear or murder those who will leave them behind?

Four analysts – Steven Cooper, James Frosch, Dan Jacobs and Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau – will briefly reflect on these questions to kick off our discussion.
