Presenter: JOHN BAKER, PhD Painter and Professor of Art History at the Massachusetts College of Art Affiliate Scholar, Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, 2000-2002
With a commitment to the idea of art as wish fulfillment, John Baker will take an up-close look at a single instance of his own studio/creative process and will try to follow the feelings associated with the successive stages of this process. Finding one of his collage paintings to have been created as a replacement for significant lost love sources, he will then see maintenance of connection to lost love sources as generally prevalent in his creative processes and will find a seeming relation of these processes to Freud’s definition of melancholia.
