The Fellowship in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, offered by the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI), is a one-year program designed to enhance participants’ grasp of the principles and practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The Fellowship is a complete introductory course of study in itself, and can also serve as an exploratory and introductory year for clinicians who are considering more extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
The Fellowship offers two seminars each week, one theoretical and one clinical, led by outstanding teachers. The seminars are held at BPSI over three ten-week trimesters during the academic year, on Thursday evenings at 5:30 and 8:00 pm.
The sequence of theoretical seminars is:
Comparative Theory
Introduction to Technique
Models for Therapeutic Action
Clinical seminars consist of discussion of case material presented by instructors and class members. Senior faculty members serve as discussants.
Each student’s professional and educational needs are unique and evolving. BPSI’s priority is to support the individual developmental trajectories of its students, at all levels throughout their training. A spirit of mentorship pervades the program. In addition, each Fellow is matched with a faculty advisor to discuss individual training goals and options. Each class also has a class advisor, to discuss issues of common concern.
The Fellowship provides an opportunity for psychotherapy supervision at reduced fees with a wide choice of experienced members of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Supervision is available for clinicians who are independently licensed, or who practice under institutional license such as in a hospital or clinic. Malpractice coverage is required. BPSI itself is not a treatment facility. Thus, supervision is an educational opportunity, and legal responsibility for the treatments discussed remains with the individual clinicians or with the institutions at which the students practice.
Students who complete the one-year Fellowship have the option of applying to the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ATP). Applicants accepted continue their education by entering the ATP as second-year students. The Fellowship is also excellent preparation for clinicians wishing to apply to BPSI’s training program in psychoanalysis. In keeping with our developmental conception of the educational process, BPSI members, including advisors and instructors and many others, are eager to help students think through their individual training trajectories.
The Fellowship is designed especially for mental health clinicians who have completed or are in an advanced phase of their requisite clinical training (psychiatric residency, psychology internship, MSW, masters in psychiatric nursing, etc.) and who desire further didactic and clinical education in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Senior clinicians with years of clinical experience also find the Fellowship valuable in providing a coherent theoretical grounding to their work, as well as a rich environment for clinical thinking.
BPSI is a vibrant intellectual and academic environment, and we welcome Fellowship students into our community. We offer an extensive array of clinical and educational programs beyond our training programs per se, from small workshops and discussion groups to large symposia and lectures. The BPSI library is a superb resource for scholars, staffed by a professional librarian eager to help students. Students receive a subscription to the online psychoanalytic resource PEP-Web, which includes the complete contents of all the major psychoanalytic journals.
Tuition will be $1,800 for the 2011-2012 academic year. Limited scholarship aid is available for students in need.
Applications forms may be obtained by calling BPSI, or below as a downloadable pdf. Applications for the class starting in September will be accepted until May 15. Please submit the application with a check for $25 made out to BPSI. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that letters of references are received.
