This six week course beginning in March offers a brief introduction to psychoanalytically oriented child treatment. The group will read several theoretical papers for discussion and will also have the opportunity to present or hear active case material. Likely authors will include Anna Freud, D. W. Winnicott and Peter Fonagy, et al. This is an excellent class to take if you are considering the Child Fellowship or Child Advanced Training Program for the fall.
To register for this course, please contact the BPSI Administrative office at office@bostonpsychoanalytic.org or 617.266.0953.
The Child Fellowship Program offers participants an intensive, one year course of study in psychoanalytic approaches to child and adolescent psychotherapy. The curriculum includes both a theoretical course and a clinical course to be taught weekly. The theory courses will introduce the fundamentals of child analytic theories and will review historical as well as modern theoretical approaches. The clinical courses are organized around different developmental stages of childhood.
In the first ten weeks, the theory course will introduce the historical beginnings of child analytic work and will include papers by Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and others. Emphasis will be placed on the developmental processes of early childhood (attachment theory, infant research) as a way of connecting the material to the clinical course presentation. The clinical seminar will discuss the treatment of preschool children.
In the second ten weeks, the theory seminar will focus on aspects of play and the applications of analytic concepts to child work. Transference, resistance, and defenses are examples of concepts that will be explored and their meaning for child work will be elucidated. Examples of readings for this course include Winnicott (on play and transitional experience) and Chused (on transference). The clinical course will discuss latency-aged child cases.
In the final ten weeks, the theoretical seminar will introduce modern contributions to psychoanalytic theory and techniques. The works of Peter Fonagy, Antonino Ferro and Anna Alvarez are examples of modern day authors whose work is relevant to an analytic understanding of children. The clinical seminar will discuss treatment of adolescents.
The year will end with a formal “Master Class” to be taught by one of the senior members of the child analytic community.
The program is open to mental health clinicians who have completed or are in an advanced phase of their clinical training (residency, graduate internship) and who are interested in further didactic and clinical education in psychoanalytic work with children. Other professionals who work with children and their families such as pediatricians, teachers, and ancillary therapists are also encouraged to apply. Those who complete the program and wish to continue on in the Child and Adolescent Advanced Training Program will receive credit for their participation and can apply for advanced standing.
