Application forms may be obtained from the Administrative Office. Information about the applicant’s education, professional experience and letters of reference is requested, together with authorization for the Institute to contact institutions or individuals by whom the applicant is known.
The applicant will then be requested to have three or more interviews with members of the Admissions Committee.
Applications are processed as received, and the applicant is notified as soon as action has been taken usually within one month of completing interviews. Medical applicants, non-medical therapists with a Ph.D. in Psychology, Psy.D., Doctor of Mental Health (D.M.H.) and Ph.D. or M.S.W. in Social Work and Research Fellow candidates can be accepted directly. To assure review of these applications in time for matriculation the following fall, you should plan to have your application submitted by May 1.
When an applicant is accepted as a candidate, he or she is expected to arrange for a training analysis with one of the training analysts selected from a list provided by the Institute, and to notify the Administrative Director of such arrangements.Training may start any time following acceptance; however, a candidate is required to have begun a training analysis prior to or concurrent with beginning seminars and within two years of the date of acceptance, unless an extension is granted by the Education Committee.
The applicant who is accepted for full clinical training in psychoanalysis is expected neither to represent him or herself as a psychoanalyst nor to practice psychoanalysis until authorized to do so by an approved Institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
All candidates for full clinical training are required to carry malpractice insurance throughout training.
The Education Committee decides upon an individual’s application for psychoanalytic training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. Its selection is based upon an assessment of the maturity of personality, the integrity of character, intellectual honesty, clinical skills, scientific interest, aptitude for psychological and scientific work, and the quality of work in having fulfilled the academic and professional requirements outlined above.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians and takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity. The American Psychoanalytic Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 hours per session in Category I Credit towards the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute maintains responsibility for this program. Please contact the BPSI Administrative Office about continuing education for social workers.
