ON BULLYING

Speaker
STUART W. TWEMLOW, MD

Presenters
NANCY RAPPAPORT, MD and CAROL RUBIN, PhD

Moderator
STEPHEN KERZNER, MD

Stuart Twemlow is a leading world expert on the prevention of bullying. His understanding of bullying and anti-bullying strategies is based on a psychoanalytically informed model. Bullying is not simply fighting, nor is it a single event. Rather, bullying is a triadic process occurring in a co-created relationship that includes the bully, the victim and the bystander, and it is a process in which these roles are interchangeable (Twemlow and Sacco). Dr. Twemlow will present a dynamic model of bullying, followed by a discussion of two cases: a school situation, presented by Nancy Rappaport, and a patient treatment, presented by Carol Rubin. There will be ample time for open discussion.

Learning Objectives:
1. To define bullying as a dynamic concept.
2. To show how individual psychoanalytic principles can be integrated with social systems theory to better understand psychopathology in group settings.
3. To better understand what factors anti-bullying strategies must address for them to be effective in different situations and settings.
