The purpose of this conference is to provide a detailed account of a difficult transference/countertransference relationship as it unfolds in a psychotherapy treatment. We will look at moments in the treatment in which the therapist felt lost, and how identifying her countertransference through self-analysis, supervision and in preparation for the conference helped her regain her footing with the patient. Dialectics involving suggestion versus inquiry, passivity versus action, and patient’s versus therapist’s goals will be explored.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Attendees will be able to recognize moments in a treatment in which the transference/countertransference has left the therapist’s awareness.
2. Attendees will learn methods for bringing the transference/countertransference back into focus.
3. Attendees will learn how efforts to disclose process material, whether through a write-up, supervision, or to a discussant can help the therapist regain perspective on the transference/countertransference relationship.
